It started with a problem hiding in plain sight: laughing gas is the third most used drug in the Netherlands, thousands are getting behind the wheel on it, and until now there was no reliable way to catch them. A physicist from the VU LaserLab and a science-meets-business co-founder decided that wasn't good enough. So they built something about it.
Science you can hold in your hand
The NitrousTest is the world's first portable device that reliably measures laughing gas in breath. Breathe in, breathe out, and results, just like an alcohol test. Built on laser technology developed at the VU, it's sensitive enough to detect nitrous oxide up to half an hour after inhalation, with virtually no false positives.
From lab to street
What makes Respira stand out isn't just the tech, it's the translation. Taking cutting-edge university research and turning it into something a police officer can use on the side of the road is exactly the kind of leap DLAB exists to support.
The NitrousTest is only the beginning. Respira's platform technology is already showing strong results for detecting acetone and CO₂, with a longer-term vision of non-invasive disease detection through breath analysis. One breath at a time, they're building toward a safer, healthier society. They even got awarded the NWO Take-Off 2 Grant!
