Beyond Bounds has become one of those DLab names everyone knows. Always present, always contributing, and a true part of what makes our community tick. We're proud to have them. It started with a storage unit, a desktop printer, and one question: why does good lighting have to be mass-produced, or only affordable for the few?
Three students from the University of Amsterdam and VU an engineer, a marketer, and a project manager, pooled a student grant, started printing one lamp at a time, and proved that freedom, sustainability, and craftsmanship don't require a design school degree or a big budget. Those late nights became Beyond Bounds.
Made with intention
Every lamp is printed on demand in their Amsterdam studio, so nothing sits on a shelf waiting. Using bio-based PLA and recycled PETG, each piece is built layer by layer, hand-finished, and individually numbered. No overproduction. No waste. Just exactly what's needed.
Materials that last
Beyond Bounds works with polymers and fibres that feel warm and light, while doing everything possible to extend the life of every material, from bio-based filament cores to recycled wood fibres and reclaimed PETG.
Craftsmanship with a purpose
By combining innovation with craft, they create lighting that's personal, durable, and made to outlast trends. From Amsterdam, with a clear goal: design that's worth keeping. They now have two designs: The TERRA and the ONDA NOVA lamps, with more to come!
