Meet Faye

Faye is not your average student assistant. At 19, she has already lived in Japan, London, Milan and Paris for work, navigated Asia solo with nothing but a backpack, and walked fashion shows at Milan Fashion Week. She will try absolutely anything life throws at her, as long as it doesn't involve a ball. Any ball (she is firm on this).

Currently studying Creative Technology between VU Amsterdam and University of Twente, Faye is exactly where she wants to be: at the intersection of design and technology. Museums, photography, fashion, architecture: creativity has been woven into her life since childhood, shaped by parents who brought her along to galleries and exhibitions before she could spell "aesthetic". That early exposure stuck. Faye: "I don't just appreciate good design, I think in it".

Modelling took Faye to Paris, Milan, and London for months at a time, and to Japan for even longer. Each city left its mark, but Tokyo in particular is to blame for Faye’s deep, enduring love of ramen and onigiri, something no Dutch lunch has been able to replace.

What does Faye do at DLAB?
As lab assistant, Faye is supporting DLAB's Lab Manager Tana, helping to keep the makerspace running smoothly, approaching the job with openess, curiousity, and ready to go figure things out. Her particular focus is on sustainable filament use and the recycling of 3D printing materials. Faye: "For me, making things and caring for the environment have always gone hand in hand".

What does she love about DLAB?
Faye: "I love that everyone is so welcome. You can share your passion, and actually make things. It's as simple as that". Faye lights up around people who are building something. Whether it's a prototype, a skill, or just a good idea they haven't figured out yet. The makerspace, for her, is exactly the kind of place where those things come to life. "Two learning goals I have for my new role are to become confident in using makerspace machines to turn ideas into real prototypes and to experiment with new ways of building and designing so I can express my creativity. At the same time, I want to grow in supporting and guiding others, making people feel welcome in the makerspace, and helping them overcome technical challenges".

What is your most epic failure?
At a casting for a fashion brand, I was asked to try on several outfits and mostly white shirts. While changing, I noticed blood stains but had no idea where they were coming from, so I just kept going. By the end, basically everything was red. Only later, in the elevator after the casting, did I realize I had a small cut on my hand that had been bleeding the whole time. By then, multiple shirts were stained, and I of course definitely did NOT book the job.

>> Looking for Faye at DLAB? Find her in the lab Tuesday through Friday, almost certainly already working on something.
